Fire Rated Doors

To meet local building codes and fire regulations, most building projects require fire-rated doors. Pine Door Company doors are now available with 20 minute ITS – Warnock Hersey International labeling in our standard designs as well as most custom designs. You or your customers can now order a complete house package with coordinated door designs and profiles.

Requirements and Limitations of Ordering and Installing Fire Rated Doors.

Fire-rated doors will be identified by a label bearing the wording “Listed Fire Door”. The main difference in the construction of a fire-rated door versus a passage door is in the panel. Panels will be made of a 3-ply laminate with a fire-resistant core. Also the tongue of the panel is inserted deeper into the stile, beyond the profile where the stile is a full 1-¾” thick. Other than these minor differences the door construction is the same as you typically see in PDC’s exterior doors.

The doors are available in any wood species that we typically utilize and in most of our profiles (the 8.5 profile is the only one that will not work). The maximum door size available is 3-6x8-0 for a single and 7-0x8-0 for doubles. A fire rated door cannot be trimmed in width and can only be trimmed ¾” in height at the bottom rail. Any other alteration will void the certification. We can provide them pre-hung or as pre-machined slabs. There are no special requirements for the jambs on a 20-minute door.

We are required to do the machining for bevel, hinges and hardware and will require the info to do this prep work when the door is ordered. Any alterations to this work will void the certification.

There may be some building codes that require a positive pressure seal for a Category A 20-minute door. In this case an intumescent edge sealing system is used (see drawings for applications in single and double doors). This requirement will need to be specified when the order is placed. If we pre-hang, we will supply the smoke and draft control gasket. It will have to be installed after the door has been sealed. If we are just supplying a slab, it will be the responsibility of the distributor or installer to provide and install the gasket. There will be instructions sent with the door with specifics about the smoke seal gasket requirements and installation.
